A visit to the camp and traditional lavvo tents belonging to Nils M.Somby's family gives a first hand insight into the life and culture of the sami people. For generations, the family has had its summer camp at Mager°ya, just a short walk from the road to North cape. Reindeer graze along the coast in spring and summer after journeying there from inland Finnmark followed by their Sami masters. The flock is ferried across the Mager°y Sound by Norwegian naval landing craft in spring and autumn. In the winter, the family lives in Karasjok on the Finnmarksvidda, 200 km from Mager°ya. At the camp one can sample "bidos" with bread, drinks and freshly baked waffles and jam. Coffee is brewed in a cauldron over an open fire. A joik (traditional way of singing) is performed and some simple entertainment and the telling of Sami traditions, way of life and history. There are reindeer right by the camp and excellent photo opportunities.
